Sweet Respite

So October has been, without a shadow of a doubt, the busiest month of 2012 for me thus far. Hence the lack of blog posts. But through some bizarre combination of factors, I find myself here at its end, with a free week.

So I’m going to try to repeat my effort from way earlier in the year and write seven posts in seven days. I’ll be getting some slightly dated stuff out of the way first and we’ll see what happens from there!

Knowing my luck, my week will fill up now and I won’t be able to pull this off.

Still, bring it.

50 up!

And how late is this post, right?

This is my 50th post on Vagrant Rant! Joy!

New to Vagrant Rant? You might want to have a look at my review score breakdown, or my general thoughts on reviewing.

If you like reading movie reviews, go here.

Into videogames? Check these out.

Like your music albums over-analysed? Give this a click.

If lists of things excite you, have a gander at these babies.

Otherwise, feel free to digest my opinions on the three new game consoles released this year, one of the most unfairly maligned games of all time or one of the greatest websites known to man.

And of course, if you like what you see, why not enter your email address in that box on the right and get new posts sent to your inbox? Eh?

To 50 more!

V V V V V

Now that Vagrant Rant is about half a year old, this might be as good a time as any to break down all those fancy coloured ‘V‘s you can find around Vagrant Rant.
In other words, just what does each review rating mean?

Nup. Not happening.

When it comes to how I’ve been spending my free time this week, there is one thing that has been running five rings around everything else.

Not the world’s best logo, while we’re on the topic.

I’ll be honest. I wasn’t expecting to be so involved in these Olympic Games. But after a truly superb opening ceremony directed by Danny Boyle of Slumdog Millionaire and 127 Hours fame (there’s a movie tie-in for you), almost every sport I’ve watched this time around has been incredibly exciting at the finish. I haven’t touched a video game since the tournament began. So I probably won’t be publishing too many posts for the next little while.

Normal service should resume shortly.

Too fast!

Things have been fairly hectic lately.

Coffee helps.

After a crazily productive two week period in which I finished four games, more than I finish in most years, the combination of the flu and saving money for a weekend road trip conspired to rob me of opportunities to watch three of my most anticipated movies of 2012, Brave, Snow White and the Huntsman and The Amazing Spider-Man. Not seeing those films of course meant not reviewing them, which kinda sucks.

Nevertheless, I saw The Dark Knight Rises last night and I plan to give it a couple of days to stew in my head before I put words to a review.

I will also be starting a new series of articles soon called Rant Chasers, which will deal with any new things I may discover about a game/movie/album after I am done reviewing it. This might include downloadable content for games, extra perspective on movies and/or the discovery that I like a certain album track a lot better after some time has passed.

The second half of the year is packed with awesome entertainment releases and I’m looking forward to covering them on Vagrant Rant!

What a Wonderful Month

Oh June, how you treat me and drain my sleep!

Oh the hidden goodness you contain!

There is a reason why I haven’t had a full night’s sleep since the start of winter. Between scouring for news coming out of the annual Electronic Entertainment Expo in Los Angeles and watching Euro 2012 in the early hours of the morning, rest has plummeted ever  lower on my list of priorities. Even though E3 is done and dusted for another year, there still remain plenty of reasons why June 2012 will keep bringing the goods. Here are just five of them: Continue reading

TV Tropes Will Ruin Your Life

Something a little different today: A plug for one of my favourite wiki websites. Get ready for a wall of text!

Stop me if any of this is unfamiliar…

You’re sitting in your lounge room one evening having just finished watching a certain movie or TV episode for the first time. As the credits roll, something about it doesn’t seem to click for you. Maybe the plot has the smallest of annoying holes, or perhaps an aspect of someone’s characterisation doesn’t quite make sense. You mull over it for a while, then later on you open the fridge door to get a snack and BAM! A really good explanation hits you. You have just experienced an instance of Fridge Brilliance.

You’re reading a series of books and you like how one of the main characters is written. Self assured and intelligent, the character has already been responsible for some pretty impressive villain-busting theories in the series, or at the very least he/she has proved to be a lucid presence. Yet in the book you are reading, the same character seems curiously blind to a potentially crucial plot development and remains so until its almost too late. For the sake of plot, the character’s intelligence has taken a temporary drop. The author has handed him or her the Idiot Ball. Continue reading

…and back.

I emerge from the Easter holiday period refreshed and packing ideas aplenty. Though I remain thoroughly behind where I want to be with my 100 movies project and I haven’t touched my PS Vita since that post I put up almost a month ago, there is much to blog about. Before April is out you can expect to see a couple of blockbuster movie reviews and a wall of text as well!

How very exciting!

A thing of beauty.

Here's a picture of my favourite blogging mug. My favourite anything mug, actually.

Hundreds of ’em

Generic Movie Pic

Over the last few years I have been undertaking to watch and review 100 movies for the first time every 365 days, in an effort to get “more cultured”. I started at the end of 2009 with a strained attempt to remember everything I had watched that year (only reaching 50), then began in earnest in 2010. I published the lists on Facebook and if you’re interested you can skim through them using the following links.

You can check out that half-hearted 2009 effort here, the fragmented 2010 project here and here, and the complete 2011 list here.

This year I’m only up to twelve movies and we are already in March. Best get a move on. My first proper film review for Vagrant Rant goes up tomorrow!

Something something something COMPLETE

Well, that’s February done.

My seven days of blogging were successful and from here on out I plan to post twice a week. It’s March tomorrow, which means the start of brand new NRL and AFL seasons, the launch of Mass Effect 3 and HUNGER GAMES! Some of the things you can expect from Vagrant Rant over the next little while:

-A new series of articles called “In Defense Of” in which I will attempt to rebutt the haters of a particular entertainment property

-More top ten lists packed with subjective goodness

-Loose, bloggy rants on topics not really related to anything

-Plenty more reviews of movies, albums and games
