And so it is that we are already at the end of another year. You know what that means – I lose the last two weeks of my year in a frantic haze of writing up ten carefully pre-considered Top Ten countdowns, focusing on videogames, movies and K-Pop music. I wouldn’t have it any other way, because this is the most wonderful time of the year. I look forward to helping you revisit some of the finest pieces of entertainment released over the last twelve months, whether you agree or disagree with my particular choices. I hope you’ll sit back, relax and enjoy a pleasant read or ten.
This is my third year doing this and I feel a lot more settled in my approach than I did in 2013, opting to bring back all ten of the specific types of countdowns I ran last year. In fact, just like last year, you won’t see any movie-related countdowns until about halfway through, to allow for me to catch the Boxing Day Australian opening of Disney’s Big Hero 6 before I sit down and finalise my film lists. We begin in about 24 hours with a real downer, my top ten general entertainment disappointments of 2014. See you then!

It’s hot in Shane’s room but the Mega Ultra Blast Cast endures to bring you our most packed episode yet, as we discuss a handful of controversial topics in gaming at the moment. We open with a dissection of the whole GTA V and Target saga, talk about the alarming epidemic of broken games getting released these days and check back in with our changing thoughts on Nintendo’s Amiibo range. There’s also our longest playlist in a while as we struggle with all the recent big game releases, more Heroes of the Storm talk, Delaney talking himself up and our biggest and best giveaway ever! There is just too much to talk about on the latest episode of the Mega Ultra Blast Cast, as we drown in news and a flood of videogame releases. In MUBC 32 we talk dog vacations, Overwatch, the secret link between Crash Bandicoot and Majora’s Mask, the latest Nintendo Direct, Shane’s obsession with The Binding of Isaac Rebirth, John Wick and Delaney’s poorly conceived plans. We also argue at length about Freedom Wars, discuss whether the Amiibo range has shown enough to impress us and hurl insults at each other as per usual.

This one features not one but two spooky Halloween-themed giveaways, plenty of nerdy Marvel/DC movie chat, a new nickname for Delaney, public service announcements about gaming behaviour, some in-depth Super Smash Bros discussion, a new musical segment, and the long-awaited MUBC debut of Shane’s adorable dog Yoghurt.

It’s Destiny launch weekend and to celebrate the Mega Ultra Blast Cast gives out a free month of Playstation Plus and talks extensively about the massive game, trying to work out whether it’s actually good or just addictive at the moment. We also discuss Nintendo’s strange “New 3DS” announcement, the complete leaked Super Smash Bros roster, which season of Telltale’s The Walking Dead is the best and whether, after all that’s happened recently, the Playstation Vita is “dead” or not. After a bit of a break, the Mega Ultra Blast Cast returns with a veritable mountain of news to talk about! Gamescom news alone provides nearly half an hour of juicy discussion, and there’s also those crazy Nintendo announcements to talk about (Most of them, anyway – the “New 3DS” news dropped a couple of hours after we finished recording). We also talk about our TV show-watching habits, compare socks, play Swing Copters on-air and tackle a meaty listener-submitted question about what the word “exclusive” even means in the videogame industry anymore.

Brett Ratner. The name just fills me with such icky feelings. The man who dragged the X-Men movie franchise down in my adolescence hasn’t made very many good films since Rush Hour 2 some 13 years ago, so I wasn’t exactly brimming with confidence going to see his latest film, Hercules. Yet a very cleverly cut second trailer (the first one was awful), which revealed the importance of the film’s quite impressive supporting cast and the lighthearted tone of their involvement without spoiling the actual movie, turned me around. Hercules is actually a decent slice of dumb fun, despite its narrative unevenness.
