Movie Review: Star Wars The Force Awakens

It’s a bit difficult to review a movie with this much weight riding on it, so soon after seeing it. The gap between the midnight screenings and the ideal start time for my year-end countdown posts is mere days, so I had to get cracking. But believe me, I’ve been mulling this movie over in my mind almost every second of that short time.

Say whatever you want about 2015 in movies – If Star Wars was good, the year was always going to be remembered fondly. In fact you might even argue that it didn’t have to be good, only better than those endlessly panned prequel films. The carefully timed, Disney engineered hype cycle for Star Wars: The Force Awakens has been lengthy, intense and omnipresent, and the, ahem, force of that hype has been looming over the movie, waiting to crush it like it did The Phantom Menace way back in 1999.

Within that unenviable context, what director/superfan JJ Abrams has done with this mega-franchise is astounding.

Mega Ultra Blast Cast Ep.39 – Back from (another) hiatus

mubc2

After aaaages the Mega Ultra Blast Cast returns to the studio, with the standard trio reuniting to discuss over a month worth of conversation material! Shane regales us with tales of his recent Malaysian adventure while Delaney recounts his transformation into a fervent Bloodborne player, with all the costs to his soul that entails. We also talk about Nintendo’s really odd recent moves, the use-by date of Evolve, and the joys of pool sweat. As a bonus, there’s hardly any Heroes of the Storm talk, because Delaney hasn’t had a PC for the last little while.

If you feel so inclined, go for a run, take a scenic drive, jazz up your afternoon commute or just curl up on the couch and play some games while you listen to the opinions of three fired up Sydneysiders.

Mega Ultra Blast Cast Ep.37 – What does a game’s length mean to you?

mubc2

With the recent controversy over the length of The Order: 1886, Shane,Delaney and I knuckle down and get stuck into a heated debate over the importance of game length on the latest episode of the Mega Ultra Blast Cast! We also talk plenty about our experiences with Evolve, the gigantic Spiderman news in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the rumoured live action Zelda TV show, the amazing first gameplay trailer of Persona 5, the “2-1-3” sequel theory and whether a zombie apocalypse could actually happen in today’s world. It’s hard-hitting and real – it’s the Mega Ultra Blast Cast.

If you feel so inclined, go for a run, take a scenic drive, jazz up your afternoon commute or just curl up on the couch and play some games while you listen to the opinions of three jazzed Sydneysiders.

7 Things I Learned During Zelda Month

(that aren’t Zelda-related)

So it’s probably pretty safe to say that much of my recent life has been dominated by writing about the Legend of Zelda series. But that doesn’t mean there wasn’t anything else going on worth blogging about during that hectic rush. Here’s a quick summary of the kind of things I might have written about during the last five weeks if I hadn’t wanted to keep Vagrant Rant dedicated to Zelda countdowns:

.

Rayman Legends is my favourite 2D platformer of all time.

I reached the end credits of Rayman Legends with my brother a few weeks ago now (which by no means indicates that the game is actually finished) and while reflecting on my experience with the game I struggled to come up with a side-scrolling platformer I’ve enjoyed more. Ever. That includes the Mario games. There’s just so much charm and variety throughout the game, it looks and sounds amazing and its co-op, at least when played with the Wii U gamepad, is incredible. This will be up there in my personal game of the year calculations for sure, because it’s just on another level of amazing.

Mega Ultra Blast Cast Ep.7

mubc2In our shortest episode yet of the Mega Ultra Blast Cast (under 1:10), we succumb to the rising temperature of the overeager Australian spring and get a little bit delusional. And by a little bit I mean a lot. There are some weird things said in this podcast. We do discuss things of substance though, such as the internet backlash over Ben Affleck’s casting as Batman, the strange announcement of the 2DS by Nintendo and why you should buy a Playstation Vita now that its price has dropped. We’ve also been playing some pretty fun games, so have a listen!

If you feel so inclined, download the following file (or just click play), go for a run, take a scenic drive or just curl up on the couch and listen to the biased opinions of three delusional Sydneysiders who really need to get an air conditioner.

Soundcloud continues to be the hosting platform:
