Best of 2025: Top 10 Movie Characters

2025 was a pretty rich year for quality films, although this time around my draft document for potentially memorable movie characters looked a tad smaller than normal. These ten plus the honourable mentions represent almost the entire shortlist, which means I jotted down a potential candidate at a rate just under once every two 2025 films I saw. I suppose this year featured a bunch of direct sequels with largely unchanged ensembles (MI: The Final Reckoning, Wicked: For Good, The Accountant 2), films where a memorable cast wasn’t really the point (The Naked Gun, Wolf Man, F1), and films where no one character stood out because everyone was so well-realised (Sinners, Fantastic 4: First Steps, the How to Train Your Dragon remake).

Also, unusually for a character list, roughly half the entries are either hiding some major secret, are absent from their films’ trailers, or both, which necessitates some mild spoiler talk to even discuss why they’re so memorable. The plot gloves aren’t completely off, but veteran moviegoers may pick up on a twist or two by implication, so be warned.

10. Akasa – Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle

As shounen anime arc villains go, Demon Slayer’s Akasa is one of the more memorable ones I’ve seen: even before getting into the significant amount of screen time his chequered backstory receives inside the confines of Demon Slayer‘s long-in-development Infinity Castle movie, his design is just really cool. Within a sea of seemingly insurmountable foes rocking gimmicky weapons and hidden power sets, this dude just beats people with his bare hands; that’s usually the realm of heroic characters. Then there’s the fact that virtually every viewer wanted to see Akasa’s demise after his final-act rudeness at the end of the Mugen Train movie – which, let’s not forget, was at one point the highest-grossing animated film of all time. Did the visually stunning sympathy play work? That’s up to the viewer, but either way the kid makes an impression.

9. Mickey 18 – Mickey 17

This guy does feature in a Mickey 17 trailer, although not the one I saw initially; regardless, the appearance of the 18th edition of corporate clone-fodder Mickey is one of that chaotic plot’s many inciting incidents, and turns the amber light in front of Robert Pattinson’s most outlandish performance tendencies fully green. As the movie gets more complex and unravels a bit as a result, Pattinson remains an unhinged joy to watch, playing a nervous wreck and a daredevil against and alongside himself to riotous results. An unpredictable plot isn’t always the best move when your world-building is thin on the ground, but an unpredictable character in the hands of either Pattinson or writer-director Bong Joon Ho has yet to be anything other than a magnificent spectacle.

Best of 2018: Top 10 Movie Characters

There sure were some characters worth remembering at the cinema this year. Half of them weren’t even from superhero movies! No protagonists this time around – Well, maybe one, technically – It’s almost all supporting characters or villains, which seems to be this list’s default form if left unsupervised. Most of this list is filled by actors who aren’t big names – at least in Hollywood – which is always fun to see too.

There are some spoilers ahead. In fact this might be my spoiler-iest character list ever, simply because so many of these characters are defined by what they achieve (and don’t achieve) in their movies.

10. Eleanor – Crazy Rich Asians

One of the reasons that Crazy Rich Asians works so well is that it has memorable characters stuffed into every nook of its runtime. I could have gone with Awkwafina’s sweet-hearted comic relief Peik Lin, or Gemma Chan’s near-perfect protagonist-in-waiting Astrid, but I’m going to put Eleanor, matriarch of the uber-wealthy Young family, at the top of this page. In what feels like a grandstand Hollywood comeback role, Michelle Yeoh glides across the screen with measured tact and an arsenal of emotional weaponry she is not afraid to use if it means protecting her family’s legacy. From the opening scene, which well and truly exists in service of the character, to the final moment she locks eyes with our protagonist across a crowded room, Eleanor never completely drops her guard and yet it’s somehow still so easy to empathise with her plight. Yeoh’s graceful performance exhibits danger and safety in equal measure and it greatly strengthens the movie.

Best of 2015: Top 10 Movie Characters

12271372_10154545164654848_1304419480_o

I entered this year’s run of countdowns resigned to the somewhat depressing knowledge that my schedule would prevent me from watching any Boxing Day films, but at the very least that allows for one positive: I no longer have anything stopping me from spreading out my movie-themed countdowns throughout the ten day period, rather than bunching them up towards the post-December 26th half. So I’m going to cling to that positive, and show you my favourite movie characters from 2015.

This isn’t a lengthy or particularly competitive list – Out of what I watched this year I could only come up with one honorable mention – but I do think it’s a strong list nonetheless. Hollywood put some pretty magnetic characters onto the big screen in 2015, and it’s good to see that for once, it wasn’t just the villains that got all the good moments and lines. There are more “good guys” and morally ambiguous folk on my character list this year than any previous edition, so take that how you will.

Also, give that I’m talking about what makes characters memorable, mild spoilers will come up.

10. M – Spectre

Ralph Fiennes is one of those actors who tends to improve the quality of most movies he’s in, which made him a fine choice to replace Dame Judi Dench in a role that she had well and truly made her own for almost two decades. Fiennes’ M is just as visibly affected by outside pressures in Spectre as Dench’s ever was, but his penchant for keeping up appearances is more prominent, making his seething rage at both his political situation and the cocky young upstart at its head tremendous fun to watch. He bares his troubles through gritted teeth and then, when he finally gets to take action, the catharsis is palpable.

Mega Ultra Blast Cast Ep.36 – All Hail Heroes

mubc2

We’ve cut back on our rambling on the Mega Ultra Blast Cast to just one hour (exactly!) for Episode 36, where we serve up just the kind of sunglasses analysis/Aerosmith references/breakdown of Shane’s love life that you’ve come to expect. We also dissect the new Fantastic Four trailer, talk about the sheer adventure game goodness overflowing from our metaphorical plates (yes, Grim Fandango is back, and it’s gooood) and, of course, talk about Heroes of the Storm, only this time I can actually contribute to the conversation, because I’m finally playing it!. Also, listen in real time as Delaney bleeds most of his excitement for the upcoming Zelda Majora’s Mask remake within the space of about five minutes, plus we talk about the Oscar-nominated Birdman! You won’t regret spending this hour with us, unless you do, in which case I’m kinda sorry, but there are no refunds. Because this podcast is free.

If you feel so inclined, go for a run, take a scenic drive, jazz up your afternoon commute or just curl up on the couch and play some games while you listen to the opinions of three dehdrated Sydneysiders.

Mega Ultra Blast Cast Ep.26 – New Heroes of the Storm & Destiny Beta

mubc2

And just like that, it’s another episode of the Mega Ultra Blast Cast! This time around we bring you the inside scoop on two exciting betas for upcoming games, Heroes of the Storm and Destiny. The results are really rather exciting! We also talk our favourite versions of Batman, some Cards against Humanity, terrible Delaney metaphors, a couple of intense movie arguments and a host of multi-game character reveals on the way to a ridiculously messy episode finish.

If you feel so inclined, go for a run, take a scenic drive, jazz up your afternoon commute or just curl up on the couch and play some games while you listen to the opinions of three refreshed Sydneysiders.
